We are part of nature, not its masters and owners; claiming intellectual property rights (patents) over life forms, living resources and living processes is an ethical, ecological and economic perversion.

Agriculture is inherently a management of biodiversity, although in recent centuries it has been more of a struggle against it. Human activity to date has been unilaterally aimed at increasing yields, primarily by eliminating biodiversity.

Diversity is an important component for ensuring the resilience of biological systems: it fosters the ability to adapt to change. In agriculture, resilience is essential to cope with ongoing climate change.

Unfortunately, however, modern agro-industrial systems have developed around a vision of efficiency based on uniformity, production specialization and monocultures, at the expense of diversity and therefore adaptability and sustainability over time.

Of the approximately 750 plant species cultivated and consumed worldwide in recent centuries, only 30 species are now essential for production and only three (wheat, rice and maize) constitute the basis of human nutrition (FAO, 1997). Currently 12 plant species and 5 animal species meet 70%'s nutritional needs over 7 billion people. As a result of the expansion of agriculture, there is a massive impoverishment of species, reflected in: loss of habitat for species not supported by humans, extinction of species, reduction of genetic diversity in crop populations.

Since the mid-20th century, the combination of highly mechanized industrial agriculture, monoculture farming, and increased reliance on high-yield, homogeneous crops of the world’s three most important crops—wheat, rice, and corn—has led to a 90% reduction in the genetic diversity of our food. Just five giant agribusiness corporations grow and sell 40% of all the seeds in the world. Their business model imposes the use of monocultures as the only solution to producing more food at the expense of biodiversity and innovation and small, local, and highly adaptable breeding. Relying on homogeneous, genetically limited crops grown as monocultures is a high-risk strategy. Just one pathogen can wipe out an entire crop because all the plants are identical and a weak spot in their genetic armor is easily exploited.

Biodiversity and agriculture are closely linked. Insect-friendly agricultural land, rich in food and providing shelter, increases food production. It is known that the less intensive the agriculture, the greater the diversity of plants and animals in the fields, attracting a multitude of birds, insects, etc. However, intensive production in a given area should not limit the biodiversity around it. We can talk about functional biodiversity for agriculture because it provides:

Proper soil structure and functions

Soil fertility and productivity

Plant pollination

Habitats for natural enemies of crop pests

Protection against water and wind erosion

Nutrient cycling in nature (including waste decomposition) Control of the correct water cycle in nature

Diversity of organisms in a changing climate

Maintaining good living conditions for local communities

Among the phenomena caused by the reduction in the diversity of our agricultural systems, we can point out:

Loss of knowledge about local varieties by farmers, leading to greater dependence on the seed industry and less autonomy in decision-making;

Uniformity and unification of the agricultural landscape with subsequent loss of functional biodiversity (e.g. pollinating insects);

Environmental pollution and disruption of ecosystem balance;

Separation between the world of producers and that of consumers.

For seeds, which are the foundation of agriculture, with modernization in the last century this meant:

Unification and simplification of our agricultural systems, with loss of almost 80% of varietal diversity, grown worldwide, and only nine species (out of over six thousand that man has cultivated over time) provide 67% of the amount of food, produced worldwide, with great uniformity of diversity within crops. For example, in the case of rice, only 4 varieties cover about 65% of the sown area, while in the case of potatoes this percentage reaches 75%;

Concentration in the market for seeds and production inputs with 4 multinational agrochemical companies that today own over 60% of global sales of seeds and related pesticides.

Biodiversity conservation is a necessary condition for maintaining soil fertility and agricultural productivity. Protecting biodiversity will pay off in terms of yield and quality. Therefore, agriculture, as the human activity closest to nature, has a huge responsibility to protect biodiversity and maintain it at the highest possible level. Farmers can prepare for extreme weather events. Maintaining biodiversity provides farms with the opportunity to consciously diversify their production – cultivating different plant species and varieties to reduce the negative impact of, for example, drought or excessive rainfall on production and financial results.

Agricultural biodiversity plays an important role in preserving the cultural identity of local communities. This applies to the transmission of traditional knowledge, cultural identity, culinary arts, rituals and local festivals.

Read more

["post-596","page","type-page","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","pmpro-has-access
["GET
