PoleRani was born from a small group of people to:
- We save historical, natural and cultural heritage
- We build a future with aware and educated people
- We work for food independence
In our meetings with people in cities and villages across the country, we find broad and unreserved support who are ready to work for the cause of "Preservation of endangered traditional, local varieties and rare species.".
The small group is now a large network.
We are building a network
PoleRani is an independent network of gardeners and people who are patrons of old varieties to promote the diversity of our cultivated plants through the preservation, propagation and further development of traditional varieties. The network works with the support of local communities from all over the country. Not employees, but committed and supportive people.
We preserve and protect genetic and cultural-historical diversity so that no more varieties or breeds are lost.
We support everyone to have access to biodiversity. Fair conditions can offer many opportunities for the free use of natural genetic resources.
We encourage the use of authentic and traditional rare varieties and breeds in various ways to ensure their sustainable conservation.
Knowledge sharing
Everything there is to know, from seed conservation to plant cultivation, is collected and passed on to other people.
What diversity means: Security, joy, and independence
Insurance for the future:
The diverse characteristics of old varieties and breeds mean a broad gene pool that can be tapped when needed. This is increasingly important because most of the world's food today is based on a worryingly small number of species, varieties and breeds. Specific characteristics can be repurposed due to sudden disease emergence, climate change or new consumer needs.
A delight for the eye and palate
The fascinating variety of colors and shapes, as well as the wonderful flavors and aromas, delight gardeners, consumers, and chefs alike.
A piece of independence
PoleRani varieties can reproduce freely, i.e. anyone can and has the right to collect seeds or seedlings and sow or plant them again the following year. In this way, the varieties retain their characteristics, and the producers – their independence from multinational seed concerns.
Ideal for self-catering
Ancient breeds are multifunctional. They provide us with meat, milk, eggs, wool and many other products in a sustainable way.
Traditions live on
The varieties and breeds are intertwined with our traditional dishes and customs, as well as with the culture and history of Bulgaria - the oldest civilization in Europe.
Benefits for amateur gardeners:
Many of the varieties are hardy and can be stored and grown for a long period of time. You can collect your own seeds, not buy from the supermarket and not depend on others.
